Now THESE are TEENAGE mutant ninja turtles! They look like they're around 13 or 15, like they were in the comics or cartoons, and don't look like they're in their 20's or 18. If they made a show with you in control, I would watch it every weekend!
I think this is looking pretty awesome man! I think their proportions look pretty good too for being young teens. I think the only reason people are saying they look like frogs is because of their feet, which also look pretty flat compared to the rest of their features. Otherwise, it's looking great and I can't wait to see what happens with this.
My one major complaint would be the weapons and the gear. Their elbow and knee pads look like gem stones, and Raph's sai are so tiny. Plus all of their weapons look like they're made of plastic. I suggest taking the "shine" off the gear and make them more organic, and focus the eye-catching color into the weapons.
There's a lot of people going on about focusing on a particular age demographic. I just thought I'd point out that the first four seasons of the cartoon series under 4Kids entertainment did really well as far as ratings. It had a good balance of goofy fun and flashiness the kids would enjoy paired in good balance with the gritty, mature content of the Mirage comics that appealed to an older demographic.
The franchise didn't start struggling until 4kids retooled the series in the Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers seasons where the mature content and grittiness was largely lost. It was saved again by the 4th and newest movie in CGI which again contained that balance of flashy goofy fun that appealed to younger kids, and mature content that pleased the older fans.
I understand the importance of directing your product to younger audiences, who are more likely to buy toys and merchandise, but isn't there a way to do that without TMNT's massive adult fanbase feeling betrayed?
Trying new looks is all well and good, but don't forget the roots, man. I think that's mostly what people are arguing for. As much as we older fans would LOVE a cartoon made for us, we know it won't happen. But we don't want to be completely forgotten either.
Please don't bite my head off but I don't quite like this look of the turtles. My main reasons is that they look more like frogs then turtles. The only way I can think to fix it is to not make them so lanky looking. But I do like the fact that you added tails. SO CUTE! As well as given Donny freakles. This does have potential in it's basic design so please don't take offense but perhaps give them a tweak here and there, give your own design of them and I personally believe you got something that could appeal to both kids and adults.
Once again, great basic idea and cute little details but make them look more like turtles... Please?
I can also in the argument above me where you are coming from. Appealing to a single age group especially when just starting out, you do have to sell yourself out to whatever is currently popular and I do believe this design will sell to kids! That much I do believe if not touched! Touched a bit will help I think to appeal to the old fans as well.
Thank you for your time to listen to at least one opinion of an old fan.
Okay now that I have slept, maybe I can be a bit more coherent. XD To me they did. BUUUT that's just me though. Fixing the feet will help I think as well as maybe giving them a bit more meat. Not a lot but a tiny bit more, the lean-ness I think is what is making them look like frogs. I did look at your other designs and read what you were aiming for and I think this would be an awesome look for them. With TMNT you won't be appealing to just kids but adults as well.
I have been a fan of them almost all of my childhood as well as some of my adult years so this is just the opinion of one long time fan of them. But I am actually excited and I do look forward to seeing if your idea will go through or not. It will be a fresh look on them and that alone is appealing to me. Give them a bit more meat and play with the feet a bit more and I think you have got it! I wish you luck in your quest!
let's be honest... do the other character designs for the Turtles... REALLY look like turtles. There's been a TON of expressionistic freedom in the design of every incarnation. I took my own liberties, I personally don't think it makes them any more or less "turtle-y" than say this [link]
well- how old are you? This is a pitch aimed at kids. Particularly boys, aged 7-12. The design is intended to reflect the more modern and stylized look of current popular action cartoons- like Ben 10, Clone Wars, Avatar.
I have a question: why do cartoon artists even need to *try* to copy styles from popular cartoons, and not try their own styles for once? Do they -all- need to look the same for some reason? Try something different, the kids might like it...you *do* have an infinite amount of talent as an artist, why adhere to what everyone else is doing?
And excuse me, but what does age and how old you are have to do with it? We were *all* kids once at some point in life. We just often forget it. :/ I honestly don't see what the harm is in making cartoons that EVERYONE will love. Hell look at Looney Tunes...it was made for kids to enjoy, but to this day, there's still plenty of people who like them even as adults. Companies need to try to broaden their viewing spectrum and expect that more than just kids will want to watch their shows. Even Nickelodeon.
I'm very sorry for this rant and to spill it out on you specifically, but...I'm honestly tired of seeing this in cartoons...it's one of the reasons tv isn't as good as it was years ago.
Also- Age is a HUGE deal in entertainment. Millions of dollars are spent by networks on sampling demographics and figuring out what it when and what different age groups watch... and then plugging in the appropriate advertising for those demos.
that's all well and good... and those are some great "principals"... but unfortunately... to make a living in the industry (and especially to get a start) you have to play by Hollywood rules. Hollywood likes sure things.
That said- just because one is inspired by something else... doesn't mean what they're doing isn't original. I feel like this version of Turtles is extremely different from any previous version... and like you said- kids might like it.
