hungry

3 min read

Open on a guy running, holding a baseball bat.

JAMES:
My name is James Hert…  And this is the day of my death.

I’m hungry… and exhausted.

and I was supposed to protect her…  At all costs.  But I couldn’t.
They were the LAST words my wife spoke.   “Protect her…   PROMISE ME James!!  You’ll protect HER!--

What do we do with our broken promises?

 Run from them I guess.

I need to eat something--  I’m so hungry.

But so are they.

Another person tears out behind James running.  Blood stains down their mouth.  As they approach from behind, James turns around, smashing the person in the head with his bat.  He keeps running.

SMASH CUT to TITLE.

HUNGRY

We see someone making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  He makes it with care.  Puts it into a brown paper bag.  Draws a cute picture and a message on it. “Don’t be jelly,  you’re my peanut! Love Dad”

JAMES:
She was everything to me.  It’s hard to explain how you can love something-- someone … so much.  Without condition—or obligation.

 I loved her.

Not because she had earned it  --- but, because she was mine.

My Daughter.  My life.

We see James and his daughter in a vehicle.  She’s holding her lunch.  They’re laughing.  Teasing.  He pulls up at the doors to her school.  As he leans over to let her out a bloody hand slams on the outside of her window.  A person with blood running down their mouth snarls and claws at the glass.

Cut to James’ foot flooring the gas pedal.  The vehicle speeds off leaving the bloody person.

JAMES:
It happened fast.   I used to think that we’d slowly break the world… over centuries if not millennia---   Who knew we could do it in a day.

“For behold, there will be a day when they begin to burn; and the arrogant and doers of evil will be consumed; and on that day they all will burn and be consumed.”

Malachi knew. Thousands of years ago--  he knew.

We are burning.

With hunger.

Another person with blood stains down there mouth and shirt comes bolting on screen and James cracks their head with the bat.

JAMES:
And we’re consuming each other.

The camera pans around James’ back to reveal that HE is in fact chasing someone.   A young girl.

JAMES:
I wanted to keep my promise…
But I’m so…  HUNGRY.

Cut back to the front revealing that the girl is JAMES’ daughter, as he lunges for her with a wild ravenous look in his eyes.

Cut to BLACK.

HUNGRY

Man was created in God's image- as Sons of the King. Mankind's selfishness set us on a path of destruction, and yet God loved us SO much that he sent his son to pay the penalty for mankind's sins and then take his own blood and place it on the Mercy Seat of his father. Through Christ we stand righteous and redeemed to the original image of God in which he created us. Christ in us is the hope of Glory.

Tangled Review

Disney is on it's way...

Could Tangled be the Renaissance Disney fans have been waiting for?    I think it's quite a bit closer to the classic formula than 2009's Princess and the Frog, but I'm not sure it's in the same league as instant classics such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Little Mermaid.  Why?  well- that's a tough one.  The story is pretty darn great, the characters are fun and well fleshed... The animation- well, while I prefer traditionally hand drawn... I can't fault this film for it's animation- it's truly well done.  for me... I think it's the music.   The score is (especially for the musical numbers) really poppy.  Mandy Moore is the voice of Rapunzel and the musical numbers all sound like something off of a Mandy Moore album than a Disney soundtrack.  The soundtrack feels almost generic, but I think the real problem is that they were missing something. The musical main course...   All the songs were somewhat- side dishes and sweet deserts.  They needed BIG broadway style fan fare tune.   A cast theme- something like "Under the Sea" or "Friend Like Me".   A "Be Our Guest" type tune- you know, that one song that sort of defines and captures the fun of the entire film.   There was nothing like that in "Tangled", and for me- that's the biggest flaw.  All that said...  I still REALLY enjoyed "Tangled" and I DO think Disney is very close to getting that magical movie formula right again.

so I was watching hairsrpay- and I think I get it.
It's about the deconstruction and desensitization of morality.  Basically, our heroine Velma Von Tussle (Michelle Pfeifer) feels responsible for upholding the moral standards that are slowly fading in her world.  But when a dark and evil force (Negro Day) threatens to destroy the righteousness and purity of the young people, Velma stands up and ends Negro Day.   Meanwhile a young girl, Tracy Turnblad becomes enchanted and ensnared by the seductive ways of Negro Day.  Tracy ends up leading a small group of kids and her mother to a secret negro meeting where all sense of morality has been stripped away.  It's literally a cesspool of sin, where the kids are performing pseudo sexual acts and anything your hearts desire is permissible.  They end up meeting the leader- a devilish woman who tempts Tracy and her friends with sexuality and Tracy's mom with delicious gluttony.  In the end evil wins and Tracy, used as a puppet- rallies the masses and initiates a nation wide demoralization by spreading a false message of "acceptance".   I believe this movie is meant to be a warning.  It's the classic story of the wolf in sheep's clothing.
